In late 2020, Apple started to use the M-series chips in their computers (both desktop and MacBooks) vs the Intel chips from before 2020.
You can check this by clicking on the Apple menu (top left), selecting About this Mac. A window will appear with information about your computer. If it says Chip, that's the Apple Silicon. If it says Processor, that is the Intel processor.
